Snowbird Season on the Alabama Gulf Coast

November through March, the Alabama coast turns into a different place. Quieter, cheaper, and considerably more social than most people expect.

Snowbird season here runs from November to March, and the crowd builds through January and stays into early March. If you have only ever seen this coast in July, the winter version will surprise you. The beach is empty enough to walk for a mile without passing anyone, and the people who do come tend to stay for months rather than days.

What the weather actually does

Nobody is swimming in January. That is the honest starting point. But the air is mild and the sun is out far more than people from the Midwest expect.

Average daily highs, by month:

That is jacket weather in the morning and shirtsleeves by lunch. It is also the driest, clearest stretch of the year, which matters if your alternative is four months of grey.

The part people do not expect: it is sociable

The assumption is that winter here means an empty condo and a lot of television. It does not, unless you want it to.

Snowbirds organise into clubs, usually by home state, and run their own calendar of game nights, potlucks, hobby groups and beachside socials through the season. If you turn up from Michigan or Ontario, there is a good chance a group of your neighbours is already meeting weekly.

The tourism office also runs a Winter Showcase Series through January and February. Free sessions, local experts, talks on the area's history, nature, art and culture. It is a genuinely good way to learn where you are staying rather than just occupying it.

What is open in winter

Most of it. The golf courses run year round and are at their best when it is 65 degrees instead of 95. Fishing carries on. The Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail is far more pleasant without August humidity. Museums, restaurants and the Gulf State Park nature programs all operate through the season.

Some seasonal beach concessions close down, and a handful of restaurants take a few weeks off in deep January. Nothing that changes the shape of a month here.

The winter calendar

There is more on than in the shoulder months either side of it.

Practical things worth knowing

Bring layers and a jacket. Bring something waterproof. You will not need much else.

The beach is at its best for walking and shelling in winter, when storms have turned things over and there is nobody in your way. Bring proper shoes for the trail, because you will use it more than you think.

If you are travelling with a dog, read our guide to what is actually allowed on the beaches here before you book. The rule catches people out year round, and it does not relax in winter.

On cost: monthly rates are a different animal from nightly rates, and the gap is bigger than most people assume. It is worth asking for a monthly quote rather than multiplying a nightly rate by thirty and deciding it is out of reach.

Who this actually suits

Retirees are the obvious answer, and they are the majority. But the season increasingly suits anyone who works remotely and would rather do it somewhere with a beach in February.

The thing that makes it work is length. A week here in January is fine. A month is transformative, because you stop being a visitor and start having a routine: the same coffee place, the same stretch of trail, the same neighbours at the pool.
