Short answer: no. Dogs are not allowed on the Gulf sand in Gulf Shores or Orange Beach. Not on a leash, not at sunrise, not in the off season.
This catches people out, and it usually catches them late. One of our guests said it plainly in a review after a week at Salty Shells with their dog:
Very much appreciated being able to bring our pup, which made a huge difference. I only wish we were able to bring him to beach with us. Did not learn till we got there that none of the beaches allow pets.
Guest review, August 2026
Finding that out in the parking lot on day one is a rough start to a week. So here is the whole picture, including where your dog can actually go, which turns out to be more places than most visitors expect.
The actual rule
Gulf Shores puts it in capital letters. From the city's own beach rules: "PETS ARE NOT ALLOWED on any of the sand beaches in Gulf Shores. Pets are welcome at Gulf Place along the boardwalk and Town Green, but they may not travel on the sand beaches."
Orange Beach is the same. Dogs are not permitted on the Gulf beaches there either. Perdido Key, just over the Florida line, runs the same policy, so driving east does not solve it.
The rule covers the sand. It does not cover the whole coast, and that distinction is the part people miss.
Service animals are treated differently under federal law. If that applies to you, contact the city directly rather than relying on a blog post.
The one exception worth driving for
Fort Morgan. Leashed dogs are allowed on the bayside stretch between the Quarantine Wharf and the Fort Morgan Fishing Pier, and around the historic fort itself on the nature trails and recreation areas.
It is bay water rather than Gulf surf, which honestly suits most dogs better. Calmer, shallower, and far fewer people. It is a drive west along the peninsula from Gulf Shores, so treat it as a half-day rather than a quick trip.
Where dogs actually go
Two proper dog parks
- Gulf Shores Dog Park, 308 Clubhouse Drive. Open sunrise to sunset, seven days. Fenced, shaded, separate sides for small and large dogs, water and waste stations.
- Unleashed, 27920 Canal Road, Orange Beach. Three quarters of an acre with double-gate entry and separate fencing for small and large dogs. Two dogs per handler, and vaccinations need to be current.
Water, just not the Gulf
- The Dog Pond at Lake Shelby, in Gulf State Park. Purpose-built, with agility obstacles and communal toys.
- Orange Beach Waterfront Park. Shallow water, a paved path, picnic tables. Good for a dog that likes to wade more than swim.
- Pirate's Cove in Josephine. A pet-friendly beach area where dogs swim while you eat.
Trails
- Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail in Gulf State Park. Fifteen connected trails, more than 27 miles, six ecosystems. Much of it is shaded, which matters more than you think in July.
- Wade Ward Nature Park. A boardwalk through wetlands. Short, easy, good for an evening.
Somewhere to sit down
Patios that welcome dogs include The Gulf, Avenue Pub, Big Beach Brewing, Woodside at Gulf State Park, OSO at Bear Point, and Tacky Jack's. The Wharf in Orange Beach is dog-friendly to walk around, which makes for an easy evening when the sand is off the table.
Planning around it
The trick is deciding in advance who does what, instead of negotiating it every morning.
Most families we host split the day. Beach in the morning while one adult stays back or takes the dog to the trail, then everyone regroups at the house for the afternoon. Nobody feels like they drew the short straw if it was the plan all along.
A few practical things. Summer sand runs hot enough to hurt paws well into the evening, so the trail is often the kinder option anyway. Bring more water than you think. And check that your rental actually allows dogs before you book, because plenty of listings on this coast do not.
Here is the honest version. If your picture of this trip is your dog running the surf line at sunset, the Alabama Gulf Coast is not that place. Panhandle beaches further east have stretches that allow it. But if you want a dog that sleeps hard every night because it spent the morning on 27 miles of shaded trail and the afternoon in a lagoon, this coast is very good at that.
Our two dog-friendly homes
Salty Shells, Orange Beach. Sleeps 10, three bedroom suites, community pool a short walk away. Up to two dogs under 50 pounds at $100 per dog. The open lot next door is a good stretch-out spot.
Little Lagoon, Gulf Shores. Sleeps 8 on quiet West Beach, with deeded beach access, a community pool, and a lagoon pier. Same policy: two dogs under 50 pounds, $100 per dog.
The Hangout House is not pet-friendly, so if you are travelling with a dog, one of the other two is your home.
