There is no single best month. There is a best month for what you actually want, and they are not the same thing.
Most guides to this question quietly assume you want hot weather and do not mind crowds. That is one answer. Here is the honest version, month by month, from people who watch this calendar fill and empty every year.
The short version

Spring: March to May
March averages around 70°F and the water is still too cold for most people. It is also spring break, which transforms parts of Gulf Shores for a few weeks. If you are travelling as a family in March, check the local school calendars before committing.
April, around 75°F, is one of the genuinely underrated months. Warm enough for the beach, not yet crowded, everything open.
May is the sweet spot on paper: around 81°F and, importantly, the driest month of the year at roughly three inches of rain across eight days. It is also when the Hangout Music Festival takes over the beachfront in Gulf Shores, which is either exactly what you want or a very good reason to be in Orange Beach that weekend.
Summer: June to August
June is peak family season, around 88°F, water warm, everything running. If you have school-age children this is probably your month and there is no point pretending otherwise. Book early.
July hits 90°F and is the busiest stretch of the year. Everything is open, everything is full, everything is at its highest price.
August is the month worth being honest about. Still 90°F, but it is also by a distance the wettest month of the year, averaging around eight inches of rain across eighteen days. That is not a washout, because Gulf Coast rain tends to arrive as an afternoon thunderstorm and leave again. But if you are planning a week in August, plan indoor options for two or three afternoons and you will have a much better time.
Autumn: September to November
September stays warm at around 86°F, the water is at its most comfortable all year, and the crowds thin sharply after Labour Day. It is also peak hurricane season, which is worth knowing rather than worrying about. Travel insurance is sensible in September.
October, around 79°F, is the one we would pick. Warm days, comfortable evenings, water still swimmable, and a fraction of the summer crowd. Prices drop considerably. If you can travel outside school holidays, this is the month.
November averages around 70°F. Too cool for most people to swim, ideal for everything else. This is when the snowbird season starts and the coast settles into its quieter shape.
Winter: December to February
December around 64°F, January around 61°F, February around 63°F. January is the coldest month of the year here, which in local terms means a jacket in the morning.
Nobody is swimming. But the beach is empty, the walking is excellent, the light is beautiful, and prices are at their lowest of the year. There is a whole season built around this, which we have written about in our guide to snowbird season.
Two things that matter more than the month
School holidays move the needle harder than weather. The same week in June costs and feels completely different depending on whether it lands in a school break. If your dates are flexible by even a week, check the calendar before the forecast.
Where you stay changes what the weather means. A rainy August afternoon is miserable in a small condo and perfectly fine in a house with room to spread out and a covered porch. We built all three of ours with that in mind, because we have sat out those afternoons ourselves.
So when should you come
If you have no constraints, come in October. If you have children in school, come in June and book it early. If you want the place close to yourself, come in January and stay a while.
